Utah State - 11/17/12

Where do I begin? We go on the road and score 62 points and we are 9 - 1. I knew this team was special and they are taking me places that I did not even know existed. I am so darn proud of this team. I turned over a new leaf last week and I hope I can keep that booger turned over. I thought I did a pretty good job of staying positive and I think my melt down at the UTSA game really helped me get through the Texas State game. I was so proud of Matt Nelson after the Texas State game. Not only did he get his rhythm back he passed Josh Scobee and is now the all time career scorer for a kicker at La Tech. How amazing is that? Matt ended the night with 342 career points and now only needs 3 points to pass Troy Edwards to become La Tech's all time leading scorer. In my book that is one huge accomplishment. Congratulations Matt Nelson! It is time for me to get my mind right, extra drawers packed and my emotions in check for Utah State.
This is our 3rd Aggie team to play this year. I know it has to be another NCAA record. I stumbled across this fight song on the Utah State athletics site. It is called The Scotsman. Show me a Scotsman who doesn't love the thistle, Show me an English man who doesn't love the rose, Show me a true blooded Aggie from Utah who doesn't love the spot where the sagebrush grows! What the heck is that? Sounds like some wacky weed is being passed out in Logan! Now I know for certain that this Blue Aggie team is truly from a different mother. This will be a very tough game and I like our chances at home. With school being out I sure hope we get the fans in the stands. Theses guys need all of the support they can. This will be an emotional game for Janet & I. It will be Senior Day and the last time that we get to watch Matt play football at Joe Aillet Stadium. It is hard for me to believe that 4 years have gone by so fast.
We have made so many new friends and the support of Matt Nelson and our family has been so amazing. I just hope when I walk out on the field with Matt when his name is announced that I don't lose it. I spoke with Matt several times during the week. He said that practices have gone well. He said he was kicking the ball really well. The team has been very focused and the seniors have one thing on their mind and that is to win their last game at home. We have a lot of family (John, Carol, Bob, Margaret, David, Barbara, Cathy, Wes, Parker, Peyton and friends are coming to the game. My buddy and his wife (Jeremy & Lindsey) are coming over from Dothan. Ray Holly's family, RP Stuart's family and Ryan Allen's family, Mr. Harper, Mr. Hamm and his wife and Mr. Rust will all be hanging out at tailgate spot 52 as well. That is a big group! We made our way over to Ruston Friday afternoon. Once we hit Ruston we made our way over to the hotel where we hooked up with my parents and Jeremy & Lindsey. Jeremy and I were in training class together when we bought our Cruise Planners franchise. Jeremy is a huge Auburn fan and Matt had committed to La Tech earlier in the summer.
Since Matt's first game was against Auburn we hit it off right away and we have been friends ever since. Jeremy got to see his first game and now is getting to watch his last home game on senior day. I appreciate all of his support over the years. Matt had called and said he had a few minutes before chapel if we wanted to come to the field house. He wanted to show us something. We made our way over and he handed his mom a program. Matt was on the cover for senior day. How cool is that? That is such an honor and for it to happen on Senior Day. All I can say is Wow! As we were getting ready to leave Dan "The Equipment Man" Matthiesen drove up. It was so good to see him. He has been at Georgia State and there season was over so he had the opportunity to come see the game. Dan is such an awesome young man! We made our way over to Matt's house and loaded up the tailgate stuff for our last tailgate of the year. Onward to the tailgate spot to get the tents setup and then it was time for an adult beverage.
Alaskan Amber was the beer of choice. We got my dad's chair setup so he could supervise. :) All kidding aside my parents have been there almost every Friday night before the home games to help setup the tailgate spot and we are very appreciative of their support and help. After everything is setup and the adult beverages have kicked in we head over to Wow Cafe & Wingery for some wings and a few more beers. It was great just to kick back and visit with my parents and Jeremy and Lindsey. We headed back to the hotel for our last pre night bottle of red wine. After a couple of glasses of red wine we called it a night as Janet and I would head to the tailgate spot super early and Jeremy, Lindsey and my parents would head over a littler later. If you did not get there early then parking was going to be an issue because of graduation. Janet got everything setup the way she wanted and I had everything good to go when it was time to start the chili. Today was a chili fest with chili dogs, frito pies and chili on whatever you wanted it on. Senior day is going to be an awesome day, but an emotional day.
This has gone by way to fast! Mr. Harper showed up as well as Janet's parents. Andrew had his crew in full gear making gumbo and Bobby had his chili heating up. Ray Holley's family showed up and they were ready to party. Ryan Allen's family came by and it was awesome spending time with them. RP Stuart's family showed up along with my sister and her family and then Mr. Hamm and his wife came by. Kasie showed up and Dan and Dave Matthiesen came by as well. This is going to be an awesome day. We have such amazing family and friends. The chili is heating and Papaw has the dogs on the grill, so let's get this chili festival started. Everything is in position and the gun sounds. Let's eat! This might be the first tailgate that we don't have any leftovers. That would be awesome! Jeremy and I were talking and he said no where at Auburn can you tailgate this close to the stadium and he thought it was awesome that La Tech has it setup this way.
I told Jeremy so was I. The party is in full swing and the food looks like it is a huge success. Tailgate spot 52 has been so kind to us over the last 4 years and I hope to continue to keep her for years to come. We hear the sirens and that can only mean one thing. The team is close by. College Football Dad put your big boy pants on and get your emotions in check. It is time to head to tailgate alley and get that last hug from Matt as he enters the stadium for his last home game. Hold back your tears CFD. We make our way over and I give Ms. Toni a big hug. She has been such a big supporter of this football team. First comes Vince Cano and I get a big bear hug. Next it is Ray Holley and I get another bear hug. Then I see Matt and give him a hug, tell him I love him, I am proud of him and go have fun! When I saw him hug his mom I about lost it. We made our way back over the the tailgate spot and visited with everyone before we had to head up to the field house by 2:00. We made our way to the field house with Kasie. They gave us our instructions and then we made our way outside as we waited for Matt to come up the tunnel. You could tell he was ready for this to get over so he could get back to business.
He gave his mom a rose as we walked down the tunnel. I was still holding up ok. Coach Dykes was greeting everyone at the end of the tunnel next to the Bulldog. He said a few words to Matt, gave Janet a hug and shook my hand. Then Matt's name was announced. What a thrill for Matt and these players to be able to do this with their families at their side. I have not lost it yet! After all of the seniors are announced we gave Matt a hug and again told him to go have fun. We made our way up to our seats and joined the rest of the family. It looked like everyone had made it ok through the ceremony. I sat on the same row as Jeremy & Lindsey and we had family above and below us. To be honest I am ready to get this thing started. Come on Dogs! We can do this! UTS will kick off and DJB takes it 45 yards to our 46 yard line. That is a good start. Tech runs 3 plays and RA comes in to punt. UTS takes over at their 14 yard line and runs 1 play as they score on an 86 yard pass and run play.
What just happened? Did we not watch film? Tech takes the kickoff and runs 3 plays and RA comes in to punt. What are we doing. UTS starts on our 43 yard line and runs 3 plays as UTS attempts a 28 yard FG and it is no good. We just dodged a bullet! Tech takes over and runs 5 plays and RA comes in to punt. I am not liking these play calls.UTS takes over at their 14 yard line and runs 16 plays as they score from 1 yard out and UTS is now up 14 - 0. Tech takes the kickoff and starts this drive at our 27 yard line. We run 2 plays as the 1st quarter comes to an end. Wow! I was not expecting this. This is our house! The 2nd quarter starts as Tech runs 8 plays as Matt Nelson comes in to kick a 36 yard FG. It has left his foot and I see the hands up and it is good! Way to go Matt! Let's do this! Matt kicks off to the goal line and UTS takes it out to the 16 yard line. UTS runs 6 plays and has to punt.
Tech starts on their 15 yard line and runs 11 plays as Matt comes in and attempts a 44 yard FG. Through my lens I see Matt kick and the ball immediately goes backwards. It looks like 2 guys got through the right side and the FG is blocked. How does this happen? The protection has been so good in the beginning of the season. UTS takes over at our 42 yard line and runs 5 plays and connects on a 38 yard FG. UTS is now up 17 - 3. Tech takes the kickoff and runs 13 plays starting at our 31 yard line and CC is intercepted. Noooooooo! CC just threw is 1st pick of the season from the UTS 12 yard line. We have to regroup! UTS takes a knee as the half comes to an end. UTS leads 17 - 3. What is going on? I am in shock! Jeremy and I head out to down a couple of adult beverages at the tailgate. Bobby, Ross & Woody are already out there. We are all in disbelief. Where has our team gone?
It is about time for the kickoff so Jeremy and I head back in. Matt kicks off and UTS will start at their 22 yard line. UTS runs 5 plays and scores on a 13 yard rush play. Did our coaches just not talk to our defensive players. UTS is now up 24 - 3. This is getting out of hand! UTS kicks off and KD fumbles the ball and UTS takes over at our 12 yard line. Why is this happening? UTS runs 4 plays and connects on a 30 yard FG and is now up 27 - 3. We have got to turn this thing around now! Tech takes the kickoff and starts on our 22 yard line. We run 11 plays as KD scores from 2 yards out. Matt connects on the PAT and UTS leads 27 - 10. Matt kicks off and UTS starts at their 34 yard line and runs 7 plays as CK runs it in from 25 yards out. UTS now leads 34 - 10. This is not good. I need to go stand at the rail and change some of this ju ju up. Tech starts the next drive at our 25 yard line and we run 4 plays as CC hits MW on a 25 yard pass play.
Matt connects on the PAT and just like that the score is Tech 17 - 34. Come on guys! Matt kicks off and UTS starts at their 23 yard line and runs 9 plays and scores. UTS is now up 41 - 17. I think I am going to be sick. UTS kicks off and DJB takes it 98 yards and scores. Matt connects on the PAT and the score is now 41 - 24. Do you believe in miracles? Matt kicks off and UTS runs 2 plays as the 3rd quarter comes to an end. We can do this guys! Everyone is holding up 2 fingers on each hand for TD. The 4th quarter starts with UTS running 2 plays and they have to punt. We start on our 20 yard line and run 12 plays as KD takes it in from 1 yard out. Matt connects on the PAT and the score is 41 - 31. Here we go! Matt kicks off and UTS starts on their 33 yard line and runs 5 plays and has to punt. Tech takes the ball at our 25 yard line and runs 14 plays and CC throws another pick from the UTS 11 yard line.
This just did not happen. Come on CC we need to get you back on the field. UTS runs 4 plays and has to punt. Tech starts on our 14 yard line and runs 8 plays as HL runs it in from 7 yards out and Matt connects on the PAT and the score is now 41 - 38. We need you defense. I have a feeling my heart rate is pretty high. Matt kicks off and it is a touch back. UTS runs 3 plays and has to punt. Way to step it up defense. Tech starts on our 23 yard line 7 plays and goes for it on 4th down at the UTS 36 yard line and RH runs 21 yards down to the UTS 15 yard line. CC runs 1 play and the pass is incomplete and with 5 seconds on the clock Matt Nelson comes in to kick a 32 yard FG to tie the game and send this baby into OT. I could not watch even through my lens. I went down the tunnel and I heard the irruption. The FG was good! I sprinted back to my seat and hugged everyone I could. Adam McGuirt ran up and gave me a high five.
Then I started doing these hulk movements with my arm just screaming YEA! YEA! YEA! Matt has wanted this opportunity so long! I have never seen so much excitement from our fans. This is so awesome! Janet said DG tried to throw Matt on the ground and then Matt jumped into QP's arms and held up 2 fingers in each hand. Wow! Can we do this. UTS wins the toss for OT and runs 3 plays and scores a TD. Tech takes the ball and runs 4 plays and RH comes up short. UTS wins 48 - 41. I am speechless, I am sick, I am happy that Matt had the opportunity and I am not sure what I am going to do next. We are all sort of numb form the wildest roller coaster ride I have ever been on. I regrouped myself and we all made our way over to the field house. What am I going to say to Matt? Will he even come out? This was my last time to go to the field house to watch Matt come out of the field house. Matt finally comes out. He had already changed and he made his way to each family member and friend and gave us all a hug.
It is one that I will never forget. I told him I loved him and I was very proud of him. You could tell he was excited that he made the FG to send the game into OT, but the loss really did hurt. We visited for a little bit and then headed back to the tailgate area. The walk did me good. I was not ok with how the game ended, but I would survive. When we got back to the tailgate spot Bobby, Woody, Ross and several other were there waiting. I got a hug from each one of them. They had watched the kick from the opposite tunnel and they said when Matt made that kick it was a wild celebration in the parking lot. They all have been so supportive of Matt. Matt came over to the tailgate area along with Ray Holley and his family. We all got to visit with everyone and it did ease the pain some with everyone being together. I did sneak Matt off to the side as I had to know what happened on the blocked FG.
He said before he could even look up they were on top of him. It looked like the right side got gaped. We kick at 7 1/2 to 8 yards back and for someone to get to the ball they have to get through our line. He said he knew the kick at the end of the game was good as soon as he kicked it. He said he hated the loss but stoked that he was able to put the team in a position to win. We will spend time with the family tonight and then get ready for San Jose State. We went ahead and took everything down since we had an extra truck and so many people who could help. That made it really nice. We told all of our tailgate neighbors goodbye and told them we will see them at the bowl game. We made our way over to Matt's house and everyone helped unload the stuff into the garage. Then it was time to kick back with an adult beverage. RP's dad had every kind of meat on the grill and there was all kinds of food to eat.
Ray's family and Ryan;s family was there as well. Jeremy & Lindsey had to get up early for their trip back to Dothan so I took them back to the hotel and then I went back to Matt's for a while. We made our way back to the hotel and called it a night. My parents and Janet and I met Matt for church at the Bridge. It was my first time to go to church with Matt since he has been in Ruston. I was very impressed with the service. After lunch my parents headed back to Florida via Biloxi for the night. We were going to stay in Ruston one more night and spend some time with Matt since this was his last night. We had dinner with Matt & Kasie and Matt ended up staying at the hotel with us Sunday night. We took Matt to breakfast Monday morning and headed back to Dallas to get the dogs and to get ready for the last 2 days of the workweek since Thanksgiving was around the corner.
We will be heading back to Ruston early Thanksgiving morning to fix dinner for the guys before they head out to San Jose. While I am disappointed with the loss I am so proud of the team and how they came back after being down. They have that never give up attitude and it shows out on the field. I am so proud of Matt for hanging in there and trusting himself. That kick with no time on the clock was amazing. Matt scored 11 points and now is the all time leading scorer at La Tech. He now has 353 career points as he just passed Troy Edwards who had 345 career points. That is just incredible and never in my wildest dreams would I ever have thought Matt would have done that. Wow! I want to thank all of our family and friends who attended the game. We are so blessed with all of the support of Matt and words can not describe how grateful we are. Thank You! I want to give a special thanks to Jeremy & Lindsey for making the trip over to Ruston. It was such a blast to hang out.
San Jose State is up next. I won's discuss them until my next blog. I want to enjoy this last home game. I will leave Utah State alone. What a blast it is and we are so blessed to have the honor to watch Matt Nelson and this La Tech football team. I appreciate all of those who are following my journey. It is such a blast to follow Matt Nelson through his eyes and this Bulldog team. I write for the bottom of my heart and what my feelings are at that time. I am very passionate about La Tech Football. I am just a College Football Fan and I Love College Football! Until our paths cross again have a blessed week. College Football Dad!

UTSA - 11/3/12

My head has been spinning out of control all week! I am not sure what I witnessed during the NMS game. In my mind I would call it a Perfect Storm. The Perfect Storm is an expression that describes an event where a Rare combination of circumstances will aggravate a situation drastically. I saw a sputtering offense, a two headed defense and a kicking game that was not normal. Those 3 events caused the Perfect Storm for me. Yes, I know we won and a win is a win no matter how it is done. I understand that and yes this team is rolling forward towards a magical season. As a La Tech Football Fan and a College Football Dad I hurt when everything is not perfect! Alright CFD your rant time is up. No more negative thoughts as it is time to move on.
Positive thoughts are on the way. Can you believe we are 7 - 1? These guys never give up no matter what situations they are presented. I am very proud and excited for all of you. It is time for me to get my mind right for these Roadrunners. UTSA is on tap next and we have a herd coming to the game. I don't mean that in a bad way, but we do have a lot of family coming to the game. I am not sure what to expect from UTSA as they are a brand new football program in to year #2 of actually playing football. Their head coach (Larry Coker) has a national championship under his belt with Miami. Looks like another team waiting on a butt whooping as we move forward to achieving our goals. I spoke with Matt a couple times during the week.
You could tell he was upset with his performance against NMS. I needed to stay positive for him even though I don't understand how it happened. This is one game and we learn from it and we get ready for the next challenge. I told him everyday we are presented with challenges and these learning opportunities are what makes us stronger in life. Matt is very strong and his faith will guide him moving forward. He said they worked on some different kickoffs along with the pin kick to the left side of the hash. He watched a lot of film this week. They continued to work on various on-sides kicks along with PAT's and FG's with the team. He said the team is focused on UTSA and they had a great game plan in place.
We started our journey to Ruston Friday afternoon. My parents (John & Carol), my aunt (Donna) and my cousin (Heather) and her family (Rob, Mackenzie & Mikaela) all made their way over from Florida and we met them at the hotel. It was so awesome to see them as it has been way too many years since we have all been together. Then we all headed to Matt's house and loaded all of the tailgate stuff up and then headed to the tailgate spot to setup.  We got all of the tents and tables setup. Mr. Harper stopped by to visit for awhile and Mr. Garland stopped by to drop off some just picked off of the tree satsumas. They are part of the mandarin family and they were amazing. Thanks so much for bringing them to us.
It was now that time again for that adult beverage. Some of our group went to the pep rally and some stayed at the tailgate spot and just enjoyed the environment that we were surrounded with. After a few more adult beverages we headed over to the Log Cabin and got to visit with everyone as we had an awesome meal. We made our way back over to the hotel and visited some more as we capped the night off with an awesome bottle of red wine. Our morning started off early as the game against UTSA would kickoff at 3:00 PM. Janet and I hit the tailgate spot at 7:30 AM and started setting up everything before everyone started arriving. On our menu we were cooking fajitas on the flat top along with caramelized onions and peppers.
We had all of the fixings along with queso so you could either go the fajita route or the fajita nacho route. The Bloody Mary's and other adult beverages were flowing. The onions and peppers are sliced and chilling. Mr. Harper arrived and dropped off an ice chest full of beer and water. It is always awesome visiting with him. My dad took Heather and her group up to the tech tam shop and bought shirts for the game. The next thing I know is Mr. Hamm shows up and he is carrying a 4 gallon jambalaya pot with a stand. He said this is for you! I said you have to be kidding me. He said you need to careful what you wish for in your blog. I was blown away. I did not know what to say! Tears! I gave Mr. Hamm a big hug and told him how grateful I was.
This is so awesome and I still can not believe it. It looks like it is going with me to the Texas State game. Janet's parents (Bob & Margaret) and my sister (Cathy) and her family (Wes, Parker & Peyton) along with a couple of Parker's friends all showed up. Today is Cathy's birthday and I am not sure how old she is but she is getting closer to my age! HaHa! It was time to get the grub on the flat top. I was going to cook the fajitas first and then wrap them in foil and then cook the onions and peppers. Everything is sliced and diced and it is waiting to be consumed. Bobby had arrived earlier and he was going to make fish tacos. He was grilling tilapia and wrapping it with a fresh made corn tortilla's from Chimi V's all topped off with two different slaw's.
Bobby is very good when it comes to food and is super creative. Janet's uncle David arrives up an the adult beverages are still flowing. The fajitas look like they are a bit hit. We knew we were going to cook quesadilla's after the game so we decided to bag up all of the left over meat and onions and put it in the cooler. We picked up a few things as we heard the band start playing and that only meant one thing. The team would be arriving very shortly. We headed over to tailgate alley and waited. Normally Matt is in front but he was a little ways back this time. I got a big hug from VC and then a big hug from Matt. Next it was a big hug from RH. These guys are awesome. We made our way back over to the tents for some final cleanup as most of the family would head in.
I watched Matt warm up some from the gate. As I went back to lock the suburban up Flip showed up at Bobby's tailgate with a bottle of Caymus in hand and we had a nice little toast before the game. Thank you Flip! That is awesome wine. I made my way over to the stadium and found my seat. It is time to get this thing started. Here we go! UTSA kicks off and we start at our 38 yard line. Tech runs 6 plays as CC hits RPS on a 1 yard pass play for a TD. Matt comes in and connects on the PAT. Matt kicks off and we stop UTSA on their 20 yard line. UTSA runs 7 plays and scores on a 33 yard bomb and tie the score 7 - 7. Tech takes the kickoff as KD runs 62 yards on the return and then UTSA gets a 15 yard penalty slapped on top of that.
Tech starts this drive at the UTSA 18 yard line as KD runs it in for a 2 yard TD on the 2nd play of the drive. Matt comes in and connects on the PAT. Matt kicks off and we stop UTSA at their 15 yard line. UTSA runs 7 plays and connects on another 57 yard bomb and the score is tied up at 14 - 14. What is going on? They can not get that open. Tech takes the kickoff and we start the drive on our 26 yard line and run 3 plays as RA comes in and connects on a beauty. We down the ball on the UTSA 5 yard line. Just awesome RA! UTSA runs 4 plays and has to punt. Tech take over at our 36 yard line and run 4 plays as we go for it on 4th and 1 and come up short. UTSA takes over at our 45 yard line and run 1 play as the 1st quarter comes to an end. Wow!
That is all I can say. UTSA starts the 2nd quarter and runs 8 plays and fails on their 4th down attempt and Tech takes over at our 11 yard line and runs 3 plays as CC hits QP on a 79 yard bomb for a TD. Matt comes in and connects on the PAT and Tech is up 21 - 14. Here we go! Matt kicks off and we stop UTSA at their 21 yard line. UTSA runs 4 plays and has to punt. Tech takes over at our 1 yard line and we run 9 plays as Matt comes in for a 36 yard FG and based on my camera lens and Matt's reaction it is not good. What is happening? I am going to puke. This can't be. I sit here for a second and I know his pain has to be worse than mine. I decided I needed to do something that I have never done at a Tech game.
Right or wrong I did it. I went to the tailgate spot and I sat on the ice chest so I could see the score board. My wife is going kill me, but I needed to change things up. The next thing I see is that Tech scores and as the half come to an end the score is 27 - 14. I guess we missed the PAT. My whole body went numb. This is not Matt. Why is this happening? I get so worked up and I know better. I knew Matt would start the 3rd quarter kicking off and I could see by the scoreboard that UTSA was starting at their 20 yard line. After about 5 minutes into the 3rd quarter UTSA scores and Tech is now up 27 - 21. Tech took the kickoff and after about 4 minutes off of the clock Tech scores and it looks like Matt's PAT is good as the score is Tech 34 - 21.
I am not sure why the kickoff is taking so long but I did hear from a radio playing close by that Matt Nelson is kicking off from the tunnel as we were kicking off from the 5 yard line. How does that happen? We must of had some major penalties. We exchanged a few punts as the 3rd quarter comes to an end. I see that it is 3rd down as we start the 3rd quarter. It is 4th down at the UTSA 5 yard line and I see the ball go through the uprights. It looks like Matt has connected on a FG. Way to go Matt! Tech is now up 37 - 21. The kickoff looks high and UTSA starts at their 25 yard line. After about 3 minutes UTSA scores a TD and looks like they fail on a 2 point attempt and the score is now Tech 37 - 27.
Janet's dad had come over to the tailgate spot with about 10 minutes left in the game. One of the gentlemen who was in a tailgate spot close to us brought over a radio so I could listen to the broadcast. I am not sure how many plays were run but Matt comes in to kick a 37 yard FG and UTSA runs into Matt and the penalty gives Tech a first down. I am not sure if he is hurt or not. I sure hope he is not. We run 3 plays and Matt comes in for a FG and the next thing I hear is it is a fake and DG just threw a TD pass to ML and then the PAT is good. Oh my! Tech is now up 44 to 27. I am feeling a little better about the game, but I feel horrible sitting in the parking lot. This is not fair for Matt. He needs me more than ever right now.
The scoreboard shows UTSA starting at their 12 yard line and after about 4 minutes they turn the ball over on 4th down. Tech takes over at the UTSA 49 yard line and after about 2 minutes KD runs it in and Matt connects on the PAT. Tech is up 51 - 27. Matt kicks off and UTSA runs 1 play and the game comes to an end. Tech wins 51 - 27. Holy cow! That is so awesome for this team! I gave the gentleman's radio back and opened a beer and I fought back tears tears. How can a CFD leave the stadium and watch from the parking lot? It is just not right and you should be ashamed of yourself. Matt does not even know and how are you going to tell what you did. How are you going to face your family? Man, my emotions are out of balance!
We decided to cook after the game so I needed to focus my attention to that. We all normally go up to the field house to see Matt, but Janet's mom said she would come directly over after the game and help get things going. The rest of the family started showing up and then I see Matt and his mom walking towards the tailgate area. I had a lump in my throat. Matt walked right up to me and dropped his bag and gave me a huge hug. I did not want to let go. I kissed him on the neck and told him that I loved him and that we would get through this together. There were several friends and fans that came by and told Matt that they were still proud of him and they know that he will bounce back and they have all the confidence in the world in him.
Thanks for all of your support Mr. Harper, Mr. Hamm, Mr. Garland, Mr Cockrell and Ms. Toni! It was so awesome to see and it really means a lot. It is times like these that the tough get better and grow from adversity. We got the quesadilla's on the flat top. We even had hot dogs going for the kids. It was awesome to have all of the family there. It was my sisters birthday and my mom had made a cake. We all got to sing happy birthday to her. It was cool that we could celebrate it with her and a La Tech victory. After all the food was gone we decided to go ahead and take down all of the tailgate stuff and take it back to Matt's since we had 3 vehicles. Everybody pitched in and everything is loaded as we head back to Matt's house.
Everyone starts unloading and in about 20 minutes everything is put up. RPS had his family there and they were cooking in the backyard so we hung out with them for awhile. I did talk to Matt for a few minutes and he that there is something little either with his approach or shoulders. He is going to watch film as early as he can and get this thing back to where he as at when the season started. He did tell me that DG (his holder) held him up in the air against the wall at half time and in DG's words said "Look at me! You know what you can do! You know what you are capable of! Stay focused and visualize! Everyone in this locker room believes in you! Just go do it! You are not out there on an island all by yourself! Do you hear me?" I was blown away and I think it hit home with Matt. Matt told me he will get to the bottom of it and he will get it fixed. I am proud of this team and I love these guys and we will get through this.
We have the opportunities in front of us to do something really special. We said our goodbyes and headed back to the hotel. It had been a long day. I wanted to thank all of the family members who made the journey over to watch the game. My cousin and her family drove 14 1/2 hours to come to the game. My parents and aunt drove 12 1/2 hours, my sister and Janet's parents drove 5 hours and her aunt and uncle drove 4 hours. It is so awesome and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We met Matt for breakfast Sunday morning at the Waffle House before he went to church. He did not talk much, but it was great to spend a few minutes with him before he headed to North Dallas. The drive gave me time to reflect on the game and to come up with a way to be a better dad and to quit letting my football emotions get in the way. This is a great win Bulldogs. We are one step closer to achieving our goals. I am very proud of you all. I did talk to Matt after he and CT watched film. They went back and watched the Virginia film and compared it to the last 2 games and he said he has been standing too upright during his approach and this was causing his shoulders not to be square at the target when he kicked the ball. He said this is the tune-up he needed and could not wait to get back on the field and get back to the basics that he started the season with. I was excited to hear the news. I have to move my attention to the Texas State game in San Marcos. We have about 40 family and friends attending the game and the coolest thing about this game is that my oldest son Tyler is going to get to see his first game of the year in person. He is a huge Matt Nelson fan! His weekends are Wednesday & Thursday, so traveling on the weekends to Ruston did not happen this year. He was able to get Friday & Saturday off so he will be able to go visit Matt at the hotel in Austin Friday night and then join us for tailgating on Saturday. Several members from Kasie's (Matt's fiance) family will be attending the tailgating/game as well. It should be awesome! Texas State's stadium is pretty cool.
Matt played a high school playoff game there his senior season. I know when I was in high school that they were called Southwest Texas State and they were one of the best party schools to go to. It should be a great game and I look forward to seeing everyone there. I will leave UTSA here. I promise to keep my emotions in check and enjoy the journey. Matt you rock in my world! Now let's go make some Bobcat stew! What a blast it is and we are so blessed to have the honor to watch Matt Nelson and this La Tech football team. I appreciate all of those who are following my journey. I can't wait to share my thoughts with everyone as the season goes on. It is such a blast to follow Matt Nelson through his eyes and this Bulldog football team. I write from the bottom of my heart and what my feelings are at that time and sometimes I get carried away. I am very passionate about La Tech Football! I am just a College Football Fan and I Love College Football! Until our paths cross again have a blessed week! College Football Dad!

New Mexico State - 10/27/12

Where do I begin? Our train is still steaming down the tracks at full speed. My mind is going crazy replaying these 70 points we put up on the Potato Heads. How do you do that? It was such an awesome game and I am so proud of this team. These guys believe in each other and they believe in this coaching staff. I am super pumped to see where this team is going to take me next. I look forward to the journey and thank you for the trail that you have made. Great win against Idaho guys. It is time to move on to the Maroon Aggies from another mother. I am not sure how many Aggie schools there are in division 1 football, but we have 3 of them on the schedule this year. I wonder how many teams get so lucky. If you are an Aggie you are subject to stupid Aggie jokes right? This is one of my favorites. Q: Why did the Aggies run out of ice on the sidelines? A: The trainer lost the recipe. HaHa! That is pretty stupid funny! The last part of their fight song still cracks me up. We'll win this game or we will know the reason why! And when we win this game we'll buy a keg of booze, and we'll drink it to the Aggies 'till we wobble in our shoes. I guess you will know the reason why and that will be a beat down by the baddest dawgs in the land. :) I spoke with Matt several times during the week. Practices have gone well and he was kicking the ball well. Because he is kicking the ball so many times during the game they were going to limit the amount of kicks he took during the week. My leg would of already fallen off. He said the team was very focused on their game plan for New Mexico State. The team and special team meetings have been full of energy. We are still going to try and pin the tail on the donkey in the left corner on kickoffs. He said they have a couple of different on-sides they practiced during the week. He said the guys at the house (MN, RH, RA & RPS) all got pumpkins and they had a carving party. Some of them were pretty good. Matt carved the Tech logo in his. I am not sure how he did that as he has a hard time with knifes especially when he is eating. :) I really hate the day of a game that I am not going to attend. It seams to drag on forever. Janet's mom & dad came up from Spring on Friday night and they were going to stay with us over the weekend. Bob's (Janet's dad) sister Betty Sue is turning 80 on Halloween and we were going to a early birthday celebration at Janet's cousins (Kim & Nick) house. They served some awesome barbecue from Red Hot & Blue and their potato salad was to die for. Happy Birthday Betty Sue! We watched a little football and then it was time to head to the house so I could get ready for the game. I have to prepare myself for these watching parties. I am normally a mess as I wait for game time to start. Janet's aunt & uncle (David & Barbara) were coming over as well to watch the game. We signed up for ESPN Game Plan for the day. I am not sure how I am going to watch the game as Janet and I normally sit in different rooms when we watch the game. I am always about trying new things so this should be interesting. It is almost game time and my red wine is in my hand. Here we go! Let's get this party started. Matt kicks off to the goal lie and NMS brings it out to their 32 yard line. NMS runs 3 plays and punts. Tech takes over at their 28 yard line and runs 12 plays and Matt comes in to kick a 40 yard FG. I head to the next room and wait for a it's good and I get a high snap and it is no good. What is going on? This is not supposed to happen. More red wine please. NMS takes over and runs 3 plays and has to punt again.
Tech takes over at the NMS 50 yard line and runs 10 plays as KD runs it in from 2 yards out. Matt connects on the PAT. Tech is up 7 - 0. Let's bring it guys! Matt kicks off and we stop NMS at their 23 yard line. NMS runs 5 plays and they have to punt. Tech starts at their 13 yard line and we run 3 plays as RA comes in to punt. Did he come in to punt or what? He just bombed it 85 yards. I don't think I have ever seen a punt that long. Heck of a punt RA. NMS starts from their 2 yard line and runs 6 plays as the 1st quarter comes to an end. NMS starts the 2nd quarter 2 plays and has to punt. Tech takes over at their 20 yard line and we run 16 plays and Matt comes in to kick a 23 yard FG. I moved to a different room and waited for the all clear sign and I get a nope. It is no good. What in the world is going on? This is not Matt! I think I am going to puke. I get my glass of red wine and I head to the patio. Wow! NMS takes over at their 20 yard line and runs 5 plays and has to punt. Tech takes over at their 25 yard line and runs 7 plays and Matt comes in to kick a 37 yard FG. I stayed on the patio and listened and I got a no good. I am going to cry and puke! Something has to be going on. This is crazy! What am I doing wrong? I have already changed clothes twice since the game has started, but whatever I am doing is not working. I feel so bad for Matt as he has had an awesome season going on so far. It is time for a new streak. CFD get your head back into the game. No one wants to listen to your "What is going on BS". NMS takes over at their 20 yard line and runs 5 plays and has to punt. Tech takes the ball on their 4 yard line and we run 4 plays and RA comes in to punt. NMS starts on their 8 yard line and runs 1 play as the 1st half comes to an end. Tech is up 7 - 0. I don't know what to do! Where is this high powered offense? Our FG team is killing me! Our defense is doing what they are supposed to. Why is this happening to me? Ome on drawers, don't fail me now! My box of red wine and I need to have some deep conversations! The 3rd quarter starts and Tech starts on their 24 yard line and runs 3 plays and RA comes in to punt. This is not what I wanted to see. NMS starts on their 34 yard line and runs 6 plays and fumbles as VC recovers the ball at our 43 yard line. That is what I am talking about. Tech runs 5 plays and CC hits MW on a 44 yard bomb and Tech scores a TD. Matt comes in and connects with the PAT. Game on! Matt kicks off and we stop NMS at their 29 yard line. NMS runs 6 plays and fumbles the ball and it is recovered by AT at our 37 yard line. Keep it up guys! Tech run 3 plays and RA comes in to punt. NMS starts at their 28 yard line and runs 1 play as CB intercepts the ball. Now we have to do something with this turnover. Tech starts this drive at the NMS 28 yard line and we run 5 plays as CC runs it in from 2 yards out and we have another TD. Matt connects on the PAT and Tech is up 21 - 0. Let's go guys! Let's take this thing to the house! Matt kicks off and Tech stops NMS at their 25 yard line. NMS runs 5 plays and has to punt. Tech take over at their 14 yard line and we run 9 plays as the 3rd quarter comes to an end. The 4th quarter starts off with Tech running 5 plays as we go for it on 4th and goal and come up short. NMS takes over at their 1 yard line and runs 8 plays and has to punt. Tech takes over at their 17 yard line and runs 1 play as RH takes it 83 yards for a TD. Way to go Ray! Matt connects on the PAT and Tech is now up 28 - 0. Woo Hoo! Matt kicks off and we stop NMS at their 41 yard line. Something has to be going on with the kick coverage team. Something is just not right. NMS runs 5 plays and scores a TD on a 19 yard pass play. Tech is up 28 - 7. Tech takes the kickoff and this drive will start at our 25 yard line. Tech runs 6 plays and RA comes in to punt. NMS starts at their 20 yard line and runs 4 plays scores a TD on a 67 yard bomb. Tech is now up 28 - 14. Come on guys! Don't let this happen! Tech takes the kickoff and runs 2 plays as time disappears and Tech wins 28 - 14. I am exhausted and mentally drained. A win is a win, but this one was not very pretty. Is there a such thing as an ugly win? I think I just witnessed the Perfect Storm and it just happened in Las Cruces! My stomach hurts and I feel like I let Matt down by not doing something right. What am I going to say to him when I talk to him? Will he even call after the game? How is he dealing with this? Before I know it the phone rings and it is Matt. Janet answers and they talk about the game. I had to step out on the patio and readjust my thought process. Janet handed me the phone after he asked her if I was too embarrassed to talk to him. I told him I was not embarrassed at all. Sometimes stuff just happens.
He started off the conversation with "that was not a good day at the office". He said he had no chance at the 1st FG. The 2nd FG he felt like it went off of his toe and faded right. The 3rd FG he thought was right over the right upright and he thought it was good and the referee said no good. He would have to watch film after church and break everything down with CT. He said he was thankful for the win and I will go back to Ruston and start getting ready for UTSA. I will start a new streak and I will get better. I told him I was very proud of him and thanks for keeping me grounded and upright. We said our goodbyes and the team headed back to Ruston. Matt is as strong mentally as they come. I know he is not happy with his performance and he feels like he let his teammates and fans down, but things happen for a reason and you learn from them and you move forward. I did not sleep very well! I kept reliving the nope and the no good. It is over CFD! You can not play the game again! Leave it alone! Sunday afternoon Matt called after he and CT watched film. As he told me Saturday night the 1st one he had no chance. He did hit the 2nd one off of his toe and the 3rd one he hit well. It was just not where he needed it to go. They looked at his steps and form and nothing looked out of whack. CT told Matt they were still going to limit his kicks with the team. They would spend more time after practice on the real field with JC and DG working on the snap and hold. Matt said that Marty Kent (Tech kicker 94-97), Kevin Goessling (Prior Fresno State kicker) and Josh Scobee all reached out to him. He said Josh told him to keep his head high and he was too good of a kicker to let something like this get you down. He told Matt his Sr year that he missed 2 FG's against Texas El Paso and then he missed 3 FG's against Hawaii the week after. It just happens. He said he was only 21 for 31 his Sr. season. He also told Matt that he set a new franchise record for Jacksonville with 20 consecutive FG's on Sunday, but he did kick a kickoff out of bounds and during the press conference all they wanted to talk about was his kick out of bounds. Go figure! I thought it was cool that they all reached out to Matt. That was awesome! UTSA is up next! I lived in San Antonio for 6 years and I am familiar with the school, but not the football program. They had just started the football program as we were moving to North Dallas. Larry Cooker is their coach and they are called the Roadrunners. Their mascot is named Rowdy the Roadrunner. They have been called the Roadrunners since 1977 when the students voted on the two mascot contenders. It was between the Roadrunners and the Armadillos. Can you imagine having road kill as your mascot. I can't wait for Saturday to get here. We have lot's of family coming to the UTSA game. My aunt Donna and my cousin Heather with her family (Rob, Mackenzie & Mikaela) are all coming up from Florida. My sister Cathy and her family (Wes, Parker & Peyton) are coming up from Houston and as always my parents John & Carol, Janet's parents Bob & Margaret along with Janet's aunt & uncle David and Barbara will all be in attendance. Thanks to all of you for your support for Matt and this awesome football team. I will leave New Mexico State alone. It was a win, but a very tough win and game for me. This will be a super tough week for me mentally. Matt Nelson is strong and he will only get better. I love you man! Now go kick some Roadrunner's rear end. A special thanks to Tom Morris for the use of the photo and video in this blog. What a blast it is and we are so blessed to have the honor to watch Matt Nelson and the La Tech football team. I appreciate all of those who are following my journey. I can't wait to share my thoughts with everyone as the season goes on. It is such a blast to follow Matt Nelson through his eyes and this Bulldog football team. Idaho - 10-20-12

I am still recovering from this war that we just fought. I know Matt takes one game and one kick at a time and that is what his focus is, but on this one I can't. I can not let it go. I know I should be thinking about Idaho now, but this track meet is still running around in my head. We came so close and the recovered on-sides kick got us right where we needed to be. CC's pass to RH was just perfect and the 50/50 2 point play just did not go our way. CFD let this thing go! I need to get this "Woulda-Coulda-Shoulda" out of my thought process. Go get your Mr. Potato Head out, sit on the floor and get your mind right for the Spuds.
I am still damn proud of this never quit and never give up team. I need to uncover some dirt on these potato head people. What is a Vandal? They say don't use your dictionary to find Idaho's definition of a Vandal. No, Idaho's student-athletes go by a name earned nearly a century ago by a basketball team coached by Hec Edmundson, whose teams played defense with such intensity and ferocity that sports writers said they "vandalized"  their opponents. Really? That can not be the real reason they are called Vandals. I guess that is what can happen when you live in Moscow. We are the ones who are going to cause damage and destruction.
The potato heads will feel vandalized when we get finished with them. That nickname needs to go back in the ground and grow some more. I talked to Matt a couple of times during the week. He said he felt good and his nasal pressure was starting to calm down. He said he was kicking the ball well and was trying to limit his amount of kicks during the week so he can continue to stay fresh during the game. They continued to work on the left corner for kickoffs and he played around with some new on-sides kicks. I asked Matt if they were truly focused on Idaho and he said that is all they are focused on. He said the coaches do a great job keeping them focused on the game at hand and nothing else.
He said the practices have been intense but very focused. We made our way to Ruston late Friday afternoon. We met my parents at the hotel and then headed to Matt's to gather all of the tailgate stuff and then headed to our tailgate spot. After all of the tents and tables were set up it was time to kick back and enjoy a few adult beverages. I am ready for this team to move me forward to another victory. After some grub at WOW and a nice bottle of red wine we called it a evening. We made our way to the stadium around 8:30 so we could get everything setup for an awesome day of tailgating and watching these Bulldogs take care of business.
After everything was setup it was now time for the Bloody Mary bar to open up and I was ready. On our menu today was a baked potato bar, chopped beef stuffed jalapenos wrapped in bacon, Earl Campbell Hot Links and chicken & poblano peppers with queso sausages. The potatoes were on the grill and the family and friends have arrived. What an awesome day! Bobby had made it in and his tailgate tents were set up. He was making Red Beans & Rice in this awesome Jambalaya pot ( I want one) and Bradly & Bryan were doing ribs and crayfish bread. The food is cooked and the adult beverages are flowing.
I don't know what it is, but after cooking I am never hungry  I am always thirsty though. I did get to sample Bobby's red beans & rice and it was to die for. Then Bryan brought over some crawfish bread and it was amazing. After all of that Bradly brought over some ribs and some more of this awesome crawfish bread. Man was it good! We really do have great tailgate neighbors. Is it game time yet? We see the band make their way down to tailgate alley and we know the team is close to arriving. We see the buses and make or way over to watch the team make their way to the field.
We see Matt and I give Matt a big bear hug and told him to go have fun. After a few more adult beverages we make our way over to the stadium. It's game time so let's get this part started. Matt kicks off and Idaho fumbles and Tech recovers the ball at the 1 yard line. Are you kidding me? KD takes the hand off and takes it in from 1 yard out. Matt connects on the PAT and just like that Tech is up 7 - 0. Matt kicks off and we stop Idaho at their 12 yard line. Idaho runs 3 plays and has to punt. Tech takes over at their 34 and runs 5 plays as KN runs it in from 2 yards out. Matt connects on the PAT. Matt kicks off we stop Idaho at the 26 yard line.
Idaho runs 2 plays and scores on a 58 yard pass play. Tech takes the kickoff and runs 9 plays as RH takes it in from 5 yards out. Matt connects on the PAT and Tech is now up 21 - 7. Matt kicks off and Idaho takes it to the house for a 92 yard touchdown. What just happened? Tech takes the kickoff and starts at their 25 yard line.Tech runs 5 plays as KD runs it in from 1 yard out. Matt connects on the PAT and just like that Tech is up 28 - 14. Matt kicks off and hold Idaho to their 14 yard line. Idaho runs 5 plays and has to punt. Tech starts at their 15 and runs 10 playes as CC hits QP for a 20 TD pass. Matt connects on the PAT and Tech is now up 35 -14.
Matt kicks off and Idaho runs 2 plays as the 1 st quarter comes to an end. Wow! I am out of breath and we have 3 quarters left. The 2nd quarter starts as Idaho runs 1 play and has to punt. Tech starts at their 26 yard line and runs 5 plays as CC hits MW for a 36 yard TD. Matt connects on the PAT and Tech is now up 42 - 14. Holy Cow! Matt kicks off and we have a touch back. Idaho runs 3 plays and has to punt. Tech starts at their 45 yard line runs 6 plays as KD takes it in form 7 yards out. Matt connects on the PAT and Tech is now up 49 - 14. I am exhausted! Matt kicks off and Idaho starts this drive on their 23 yard line.
Idaho runs 7 plays and Tech stops them on their 4th down and 21 yard attempt. Tech takes over at their 21 yard line and runs 8 plays as RH fumbles and Idaho runs it back 84 yards before the ball is knocked out by QP at the 1 yard line. Idaho runs 1 play and scores a TD. Tech is now up 49 - 21. Tech takes the kick off and this drive starts at their 39 yard line and runs 3 plays as KD takes it in from 2 yards out for a TD. Matt connects on the PAT and Tech is now up 56 - 21. Matt kicks off and Idaho starts on their 18 yard line. Idaho runs 2 plays and LL intercepts the ball. Tech runs 4 plays and Matt Nelson comes in to kick a 43 yard FG and it is no good.
I am not sure what happened. Janet said it looked like it barely missed left. Idaho takes over and runs 1 play as the half come to an end. Tech is up 56 - 21. This is just incredible! Where is this team going to take us next. How do you score 56 points in one half? Tech starts the 3rd quarter with the ball and runs 10 plays and does not convert on a 4th down play. Idaho takes over at their 27 yard line and runs 9 plays and they fail at their 4th down attempt. Tech takes over at their 20 yard line and runs 5 plays as KD runs it in from 20 yards out and score a TD.
Matt connects on the PAT and Tech is now up 63 - 21. Score more points! Matt kicks off and Idaho will start at their 21 yard line. Idaho runs 4 plays and fumbles the ball as Tech recovers the ball. Tech starts at the Idaho 44 yard line and runs 7 plays as ZG runs it in from 3 yards out for a TD. Matt connects on the PAT and Tech is now up 70 - 21. Wow! This is a lot of points. Matt kicks off and Idaho will start at their 23 yard line. Idaho runs 3 plays and punts, Tech runs 3 plays and fumbles and Idaho runs 2 plays and Tech intercepts as the 3rd quarter comes to an end. I am in need of some oxygen!
Idaho scores a TD in the 4th quarter as we exchange possessions the rest of the 4th quarter as Tech wins 70 -28. What a game! That is a ton of points! This offense is amazing! This team is amazing! KD is a beast! RH is a beast! CC is a machine! RA is a weapon! MN is amazing! What else can I say? We made our way to the field house to see Matt. We got to talk to RA and VC before Matt came out. Matt had several family members and friends there so it took him a while give each person a hug and thank them for coming to the game. I got a hug and asked a couple of questions like I was some reporter. I need to refrain from those questions and wait until later but sometimes I can not hold back.
He said his leg still felt good but he knew later in the night he would be sore. An ice bath on Sunday would cure any soreness and put him back on the road to recovery. I asked him about his missed FG and he said he hit the ball well. It went a couple of feet left of the left upright. He would have to wait to watch film on Sunday, but if he had to guess is that his plant foot was probably straight at the left upright instead of being pointed more towards the center of the upright. We made our way back over to the tailgate spot. Earlier in the day we met a young man who plays soccer and wants to be a kicker and he wanted to meet Matt. We told him and his family that Matt would be with us after the game and their son could meet Matt.
He was waiting for us when we got there and Matt introduced himself to him and they talked soccer and football for a little bit and then Matt held the ball for him as he kicked some balls in the parking lot. It was really pretty cool to see and Matt loves to help these kids in anyway he can. I was very proud of Matt. We picked up a few things and then headed to Chili's for a late night dinner. I sure wish Ruston had more of a late night restaurant choice. It seems like everyone closes right after the game. After dinner we headed back to the hotel. It had been a long exciting day and this kid was tired. My parents were heading back to Florida early and we were going to meet Matt at the tailgate spot at 9:30 for take down and then store it back at Matt's house.
We say our goodbyes and head back to North Dallas. My reflections of the game are awesome. I am just on the ride and I am waiting to see where this team takes me next. They play hard until the bitter end and they execute when they are called upon. I am very proud of each and everyone of them. I will leave the potato head game here. It is time for me to get my mind right for the maroon Aggies of another mother. New Mexico State in Las Cruses is up next. I am not sure how many point we will score, but I do like our chances of coming away with another Tech victory. I always think their fight song is hilarious. Their fight song goes like this: Aggies, Oh Aggies! The hills send back the cry, we're here to do or die! Aggies, Oh Aggies! We'll win this game or know the reasons why! And when we win this game, we'll buy a keg of booze, and we'll drink it to the Aggies till we wobble in our shoes! I have a feeling that you will know the reason why!
That is an awesome fight song. A special thanks to Donny Crowe, Louisiana Tech University and Tom Morris for the use of some of the photos used in this blog. What a blast it is and we are so blessed to have the honor to watch Matt Nelson and this La Tech team. I appreciate all of those who are following my journey. I can't wait to share my thoughts with everyone as the season goes on. It is such a blast to follow Matt Nelson through his eyes and this Bulldog football team.
